Distinctive Characteristics of Saga Nishiki

 

This unique brocade, called ‘Saga Nishiki’, is a classic hand-woven fabric.  Japanese paper, usually coated with gold, silver, or lacquer, is used as the warp, and dyed silk thread is used for the woof.  As perseverance and sophisticated techniques are required in its production, only several inches can be woven each day.  Although these fabrics are mostly manufactured into small, practical accessories such as bags, they are sometimes used in order to create bigger items, like a Kimono belt. The 'Saga Nishiki' brocade is considered a rich and luxurious fabric and has been evaluated as a Japanese work of art.
